Hornbacher’s Donations Top 13 Million Meals for Great Plains Food Bank
Fargo, N.D. - (March 24, 2015) - The Great Plains Food Bank, a program of Lutheran Social Services of North Dakota, will accept its most recent donation from Hornbacher’s, thanks to the grocery stores’ Feed Hope event.
“With this check from Hornbacher’s for its most recent Feed Hope campaign, the number of meals they have helped provide to those in need has topped 13 million,” said Steve Sellent, program director for the Great Plains Food Bank. “We are so thankful for Hornbacher’s generosity over the last 22 years, they have been a dedicated partner in the fight against hunger.”
Feed Hope Campaign - Hornbacher’s has run the Feed Hope campaign during the month of December in all of its locations since 2011. The program has been successful thanks to employee engagement: employees ask customers to round up their grocery purchases by $1, $3, or $5. In the four years the program has run, Hornbacher’s customers have donated $155,114 to support the Great Plains Food Bank – enough money to provide 620,456 meals. Every dollar given provides four meals for local seniors, children, and individuals who struggle with hunger.
Check Out Hunger Campaign - Hornbacher’s locations also participate in the Check Out Hunger program, which has run in their stores since 1994 and collected a total of $234,905. Check Out Hunger runs during the month of July and supports the Great Plains Food Bank’s perishable food recovery effort in Cass-Clay counties – providing 10 meals for every dollar given. Over the past 20 years, Hornbacher’s and their customers have donated 2,349,050 meals.
Donated Food - Hornbacher’s has been a supportive partner of the Great Plains Food Bank for 22 years, donating more than a half-a-million pounds of food each year since becoming the back-bone of the food bank’s Daily Bread program when it was established in 1992. When you add it all up, Hornbacher’s has donated an amazing 12.3 million pounds of food, providing 10,270,977 meals!
The combined financial support from Hornbacher’s customers through both instore campaigns, along with the generous product donations from all six store locations results in an amazing 13.2 MILLION meals distributed to children, seniors and families seeking emergency food support at partner feeding programs supplied by the Great Plains Food Bank. These agencies include food pantries, shelters and soup kitchens serving individuals who are hungry and/or homeless.
