Great Plains Food Bank tackles hunger in Cass and Clay counties
with grant from the Alex Stern Family Foundation
Fargo, ND – NOVEMBER 7, 2013 – The Great Plains Food Bank, a program of Lutheran Social Services of North Dakota, was awarded a $10,000 grant from the Alex Stern Family Foundation to address childhood hunger through the BackPack Program, as well as rescue surplus perishable and prepared food through the Daily Bread recovery initiative.
The BackPack Program is designed to meet the needs of hungry children at times when other resources are not available, such as on weekends, school vacations and over the summer. Each backpack is filled with child-friendly, nonperishable and easily consumed food for four meals plus snacks.
The Daily Bread perishable food recovery effort rescues prepared foods and fresh fruits, vegetables, dairy, meat and bakery items from grocery stores, hospitals, colleges, retailers, bakeries and restaurants and then delivers this product to emergency shelters, soup kitchens and food pantries serving those who are hungry and homeless.
